Burke High junior in ICU after suffering severe asthma attack on family vacation
Diamond Conway went to Adventureland near Des Moines with her family before the July 4 holiday, just like she does every summer.
The 15-year-old junior at Burke High School rode the roller coasters. Just like she does every summer.
And afterwards she and her family retired to their hotel. Just like they do every summer.
But at the hotel things went wrong after Diamond, her younger sister and her mom went for a swim in the hotel’s pool and spent some time in the hot tub.....

High Sugar Intake While Pregnant May Increase Child’s Risk of Developing Allergic Asthma, Study Finds
Women who consume a large amount of sugar when they’re pregnant may find their children at an increased risk for allergy and allergic asthma, according to researchers from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
The study, titled “Maternal intake of sugar during pregnancy and childhood respiratory and atopic outcomes,” was published in the European Respiratory Journal.
Previous research supports a link between a high intake of beverages containing large amounts of sugar and asthma in children. However, the association between maternal sugar intake during pregnancy and allergy and asthma in their children had not been studied in-depth.....

‘Asthma attack’ siblings beaten so badly their organs failed
The toddler siblings who died minutes apart in The Bronx early Sunday were beaten so badly that their organs failed and they suffered internal bleeding, NYPD officials said Wednesday.
“These two children were beaten about the body and because of that, they had organ failure and they bled to death — both children,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said of Olivia Gee, 2, and her brother, Micah, 3.
The only two people police are interested in questioning are mom Jade Spencer, 31, and her boyfriend, Novell Jordan, 31, who is not the children’s father, Boyce said.....

7 ways to help your child avoid asthma
Asthma has a very negative effect on children's lives, and parents should do everything in their power to prevent this disease from manifesting.
Asthma is a lung disease that tends to start in childhood.
During an asthma attack the flow of air out of the lungs is limited by obstruction, caused by a narrowing or constriction of the airways through smooth muscle constriction and swelling of the linings of the airways.....

Asthma warning after hospitalisation spike
Four hundred Australians are dying and up to 40 000 more are hospitalised each year due to asthma, says the National Asthma Council of Australia.
The statistics are shocking but according to CEO Kristine Whorlow they are a vast improvement on the early 1990s when thousands of Australians died each year from the respiratory disease.
"There used to be a lot of deaths in children and young people but now 85 per cent of deaths are people 55 and over," Ms Whorlow said.....

New clues found to better treat severe asthma
Up to 10 percent of the millions of people who have asthma in the U.S. don’t respond well to the standard treatment of corticosteroids.
In fact, the medication can sometimes make their breathing symptoms worse and potentially lead to other complications.
Now researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health Sciences and UPMC say they have found a molecular mechanism that contributes to these poor responses to corticosteriods, which may open the way to better treatments and a better understanding of what causes severe asthma.....

Tots dead from ‘asthma attacks’ investigated as homicide: cops
Two sibling tots died a short time apart Monday morning after they were found not breathing in their Bronx home — and police have opened a homicide investigation, law-enforcement sources told The Post.
An autopsy showed that Olivia Gee, 2, died of blunt-force trauma, according to multiple sources.
“It looks like this girl was punched in the stomach. It’s a homicide investigation,” a law-enforcement source said.
An autopsy on her brother, Micha Gee, 3, will be conducted Tuesday, sources said.....

Increasing BMI causally linked to asthma, not hay fever
Tea Skaaby, Ph.D., from the Center for Health in Denmark, and colleagues examined the causal effect of BMI on asthma, hay fever, and allergic sensitization. Data were included for 490,497 and 162,124 participants in observational and genetic analyses, respectively. Using 26 BMI-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms, the authors created a genetic risk score (GRS).....

BRMC offers procedure to decrease symptoms of asthma, improve quality of life
Two Baxter Regional Medical Center pulmonologists — Dr. Rebecca Martin and Dr. Brian Malte — are providing a fairly new procedure, bronchial thermoplasty, to diminish the symptoms of asthma patients while also improving their quality of life.
Bronchial thermoplasty is a procedure for severe, persistent asthma. Severe and persistent asthma, the last stage of the disease, is considered a health situation in which a health provider has given every medicine to a patient but still cannot control the illness.
The patients would undergo the three-month procedure in three stages.....

Siblings die minutes apart after suffering apparent asthma attacks
An asthmatic 2-year-old girl and her 3-year-old brother died minutes apart Monday after they were found gasping for air in their Bronx home — and police sources said both tots had “marks” on their necks.
The children’s deaths are now being investigated by police as well as city child-welfare workers given the “red flags,” sources told The Post.
The family has no history with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services, according to an agency source. A police source added that the neck marks could have been a result of CPR.....

ASTHMA VERSUS TECH!
Asthma can be an absolutely debilitating condition if not properly monitored. Unfortunately, there’s never been an easy way to get to the root of the problem and it only makes things more difficult that each sufferer is affected differently and for varying reasons. Until now! Introducing, Zero Asthma.
This wearable tech not only presents an entirely new way of keeping an inhaler handy, it also pairs wirelessly with the user’s smartphone where an app tracks medicine levels in real time and notifies when refills are due.....

Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Acute Asthma Attacks
Breathing is a necessary function for life; breathing well is necessary for comfort and well-being. In the busy daily lives, we all lead, there is a tendency sometimes to try to pass off respiratory problems as "just a cold" or "just an allergy”. Ignoring symptoms that are meant to tell us that we may be suffering from sinusitis, bronchitis or an acute asthma attack can be dangerous and harmful to others as some of these conditions are contagious. Sinusitis, bronchitis, and acute asthma attacks are related problems but remain separate medically, which is one of the reasons to seek professional care for an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.....

Asthma breakthrough: Antibiotic used to treat lung disease can reduce attacks, study finds
An antibiotic used to treat a rare and deadly lung disease could be a lifesaver for adults with severe asthma, a ground-breaking Australian study has found.
The research team from the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) in New South Wales gave the drug azithromycin to 200 patients whose asthma could not be fully controlled with traditional medication.
After taking the antibiotic three times a week for nearly a year, the patients reported a 40 per cent reduction in moderate and severe asthma attacks.
"Many of them were surprised by the benefit. One lady told me she'd never felt this good before, and she'd had asthma for many, many years," study author Professor Peter Gibson said.....

How cats and cows protect farm children from asthma
It is a known fact that microbes on farms protect children from asthma and allergies. But even non-microbial molecules can have a protective effect: Immunologists from the University of Zurich have shown that a sialic acid found in farm animals is effective against inflammation of lung tissue. This study opens up a wide variety of perspectives for the prevention of allergies.
More and more people suffer from allergies and asthma. In the past decades, these diseases have massively increased in industrialized countries. Today, about 30 percent of children have allergies - with the exception of farm children.....

Mums-to-be who crave sweet treats could ‘DOUBLE their baby’s risk of suffering asthma’
MUMS-to-be who scoff too much sugar double their kids’ chance of suffering asthma, a study claims.
Scientists found children’s risk of allergy-related chest problems soared in line with maternal intake of so-called “free” sugars.
These include sugar added to food by manufacturers or found in products such as honey and fruit juice.....
