A Comparison of Three Methods to Measure Asthma in Epidemiologic Studies: Results from the Danish National Birth Cohort

Abstract
Asthma is a heterogeneous outcome and how the condition should be measured to best capture clinically relevant disease in epidemiologic studies remains unclear. We compared three methods of measuring asthma in the Danish National Birth Cohort (n>50.000). When the children were 7 years old, the prevalence of asthma was estimated from a self-administered questionnaire using parental report of doctor diagnoses, ICD-10 diagnoses from a population-based hospitalization registry, and data on anti-asthmatic medication from a population-based prescription registry.....

New cellular pathway triggering allergic asthma response identified

A novel signaling pathway critical to the immune response of cells associated with the initiation of allergic asthma has been identified by researchers. The discovery, they say, could point the way to new therapies that suppress the inflammatory allergic response, offering potential relief to millions of Americans with the chronic lung condition and potentially other allergic diseases.....

No Benefit of Omega-3 acid Supplements for Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction in Asthma

Medical Research: What is the background for this study?
Response: The use of omega-3 acid supplements as treatments for allergic diseases including asthma is controversial. Studies by investigators from Indiana University in the USA have repeatedly demonstrated a beneficial effect of high dose omega-3 fatty acid supplements over 3 weeks in attenuating exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) similar or possibly better in potency to what may be expected with a regular inhaled corticosteroids.....

Jefferson Scientists Find Clues to Safer Asthma Drug

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia have identified a promising new drug target that points the way to a second generation of asthma treatments.
Beta-agonists are highly effective for asthmatics: they turn on receptors to relax muscles lining the airways, opening them up, and allowing a user to breathe better. But for some patients, they can stop working — and there can be serious side effects, including death.....

Researchers rethink inner-city asthma theory

TUESDAY, Jan. 20, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- A new study challenges the widely held belief that inner-city children have a higher risk of asthma simply because of where they live.
Race, ethnicity and income have much stronger effects on asthma risk than where children live, the Johns Hopkins Children's Center researchers reported.
The investigators looked at more than 23,000 children, aged 6 to 17, across the United States and found that asthma rates were 13 percent among inner-city children and 11 percent among those in suburban or rural areas.....

Is Race A Bigger Contributor To Asthma Than Habitat?

For a long time, health officials thought the city, alone, caused more child asthma cases, but a new study indicates that race may be a bigger contributor.
“Our results highlight the changing face of pediatric asthma and suggest that living in an urban area is, by itself, not a risk factor for asthma,” comments lead investigator Dr. Corrine Keet. The pediatric allergy and asthma specialist continues, “Instead, we see that poverty and being African American or Puerto Rican are the most potent predictors of asthma risk.”.....
