Alternative medicine clinics often tout 'treatments' for allergy, asthma

Alternative medicine practitioners like homeopaths and acupuncturists may claim to treat allergies or asthma, but a study in Canada found that many there offer remedies that are unproven or even dangerous.
"Complementary and alternative medicine continues to grow in popularity - particularly in the areas of allergy and asthma - despite ongoing controversies," said lead author Timothy Caulfield, research director of the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta.
"Both asthma and allergies can be a serious health condition," Caulfield told Reuters Health by email. "These kind of public representations can be misleading and may lead to inappropriate care".....

Personalising care of adults with asthma from Asia: a modified e-Dephi consensus study to inform management tailored to attitude and control profiles

Abstract
REALISE Asia—an online questionnaire-based study of Asian asthma patients—identified five patient clusters defined in terms of their control status and attitude towards their asthma (categorised as: ‘Well-adjusted and at least partly controlled’; ‘In denial about symptoms’; ‘Tolerating with poor control’; ‘Adrift and poorly controlled’; ‘Worried with multiple symptoms’). We developed consensus recommendations for tailoring management of these attitudinal–control clusters. An expert panel undertook a three-round electronic Delphi (e-Delphi): Round 1: panellists received descriptions of the attitudinal–control clusters and provided free text recommendations for their assessment and management.....

Millions of UK asthma sufferers 'not receiving basic levels of care'

Millions of asthma patients are not receiving basic levels of care to keep their condition in check, a charity has warned.
Two-thirds of sufferers are not being given fundamental care to manage their condition, Asthma UK said. This is about 3.6 million people across the UK.
Full provision of this basic care would “reduce the impact of asthma, reduce hospital admissions and improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people”, according to a new report by the charity.....

Omega-3 supplements for mothers may cut asthma risk in children

A Danish study has recommended that expecting mothers take omega-3 fatty acid supplements to reduce the risk of their children becoming asthmatic.
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen followed 700 women from the 24th week of pregnancy until their children were five years old.
During the third trimester of pregnancy, when their babies’ lungs were developing, the test subjects were given a daily dose of either 2.4 grammes of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (fish oil) or 2.4 grammes of olive oil.....

Antibiotics don’t speed recovery from asthma attacks

Does winter in the Northeast make you think of snowmen, warm fires, and hot chocolate? Or, does it instead inspire visions of runny noses, congestion, and cough? Although it is less rosy, I know readers with asthma may be picturing the latter.
People with asthma get respiratory infections more often
In general, people with asthma tend to get sick more easily, and illnesses can trigger asthma attacks. In my practice, we generally start seeing an increase in the number of asthma attacks, or asthma flares, once the ground frosts.....

Katie Hopkins mocks Sir Bradley Wiggins’ asthma as he joins The Jump
Hopkins made a sarcastic reference to the controversy around medication the cyclist took

Katie Hopkins has made a dig at Sir Bradley Wiggins’ asthma in the wake of the news that he has joined The Jump.
The controversial columnist made a sarcastic reference to the controversy around medication the legendary cyclist took when competing as she questioned his ability to take part on the winter sports show.
It was revealed earlier this year that the five-time Olympic champion received three therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) from the UCI, cycling's world governing body, to take triamcinolone, an anti-inflammatory drug, on the eve of the 2011 and 2012 Tour de France, and the Giro ‘d’Italia in 2013.....

Philly study finds house calls could help asthma patients living in poverty

Tyra Bryant-Stephens, a doctor who is medical director of the Community Asthma Prevention Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, thinks doctors and researchers need to think more about an often unseen factor in patients' asthma: their housing.
When doctors see poor patients in clinics, she said, they may not have time to ask about their living conditions.  Even if they did, patients might be too embarrassed to tell them.
If they went to patients' homes, as community health workers in Bryant-Stephens' program have been doing for 18 years,  they might find them full of possible asthma triggers. They also might learn about the stresses that make it hard for their patients to take their medicines properly.....

Diabetes, cardiac disorders and asthma as risk factors for severe organ involvement among adult dengue patients: A matched case-control study

Abstract
Progression to severe organ involvement due to dengue infection has been associated with severe dengue disease, intensive care treatment, and mortality. However, there is a lack of understanding of the impact of pre-existing comorbidities and other risk factors of severe organ involvement among dengue adults. The aim of this retrospective case-control study is to characterize and identify risk factors that predispose dengue adults at risk of progression with severe organ involvement. This study involved 174 dengue patients who had progressed with severe organ involvement and 865 dengue patients without severe organ involvement, matched by the year of presentation of the cases, who were admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital between year 2005 and 2008.

Ask the Doctors: Proximity to freeway has tie to asthma in kids

Dear Doctor: We live near a freeway with a lot of traffic. Do I need to be worried about my kids developing asthma?
Dear Reader: This is a valid question. Cars release a number of small particles into the air that can irritate the lungs. This particulate matter, in addition to nitric oxide and black carbon, has been associated with asthma. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of pollution because their lungs and immune system are still developing.....

Cured meats can worsen asthma symptoms

According to a recent study, individuals with asthma who consume relatively high amounts of cured meats, such as ham, sausage, and salami, are more likely to experience worsening symptoms.
Cured meats are the latest dietary pariah - and for good reason. Over recent years, studies have racked up a fearsome list of their deleterious effects on health and longevity.
In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared them carcinogenic.....

Indoor Smoking Bans Helping Children Breathe Easier: Fewer Asthma-Related ER Visits In Kids Reported

A research from the University of Chicago Medicine states that the indoor ban on smoking has remarkably reduced the number of emergency room visits by children for complaints related to asthma.
Asthma In Children
Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases that affects children. It is an inflammatory disorder that results in the obstruction of the bronchial tube, the passage that allows air to enter and leave the lungs. Asthma can be caused by air pollutants and irritants, allergens, and even vigorious exercise in cold air.....

A 15-year study finds indoor smoking bans really do make kids with asthma healthier

Prohibiting people from smoking indoors does more than just keep bars from smelling like cigarettes, new research suggests. It’s actually doing kids a favor.
A new long-term study finds that on average, kids with asthma visited the emergency room 17% less often during the three years after indoor smoking bans were enacted than they did in the three years before.
The data overwhelmingly shows that kids really do get healthier when their lungs aren’t exposed to secondhand smoke, the researchers say.....

Fish-oil pills for pregnant women may cut asthma risk in children: study

Children whose moms took high doses of fish oil during their last three months of pregnancy were less likely to develop chronic wheezing problems or asthma by the age of 5, finds a study that suggests a possible way to help prevent this growing problem.
Asthma cases have been rising in developed countries, while consumption of omega-3 fatty acids such as those found in fish has decreased. Some earlier studies suggested omega-3 deficiency during pregnancy may affect asthma risk in babies, but they were too small to be definitive.
It’s not known why this may be – one theory is that fish oil lowers inflammation, which can tighten airways.....

Fake treatments for real diseases: A review of allergy and asthma advertisements by naturopaths, chiropractors, homeopaths and acupuncturists

A majority of Canadian chiropractic, naturopathic, homeopathic and acupuncture clinics claim that they can diagnose or treat allergies, sensitivities and asthma.
For the past few years I’ve been adding to what I call the naturopathy versus science series of posts, where I’ve been examining the public advice and writing by naturopaths on a particular topic, and contrasting it against the scientific evidence. I’ve focused on naturopaths instead of other “alternative-to-medicine” providers because naturopaths actively promote themselves as health professions capable of delivering primary care, akin to medical doctors. And in many parts of Canada and the United States they have been successful with this marketing, despite the fact that the naturopathic curriculum is filled with pseudoscience, and there is no convincing evidence to show that naturopathy offers anything that is uniquely useful or incrementally better than “conventional” medicine.....
