Report Shows 750,000 Asthma Attacks Will Be Caused by the Oil and Gas Industry by 2025
New analysis from the Clean Air Task Force shows that by 2025 America’s children will experience 750,000 asthma attacks each summer that will be directly attributable to the oil and gas industry.
The report, Gasping for Breath, is the first to quantify the effects of smog caused by oil and gas production and distribution. The authors used industry data submitted to the EPA’s National Emissions Inventory, particularly looking at methane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can interact to create smog. This chemical reaction is facilitated by ultraviolet rays and heat?—?which is why smog is a bigger problem in the summer than the winter.....

Back to school information for kids with asthma
BACK-to-school can be exciting and stressful in equal measure, but for the one in five children in Ireland with asthma, the fear factor can rise higher.
Returning to the classroom can expose children to asthma-exacerbating triggers, which, according to the Asthma Society of Ireland, leads to frightening visits to emergency department and even hospital stays.
In 2014, the most recent year for which figures are available, 127 children, aged 5-14, were admitted to hospital that September, compared to 53 the previous month.....

Food allergies in children linked to high risk of asthma, rhinitis
A recent study published in BMC Pediatrics observed the trends of childhood allergic conditions and found higher rates of asthma, lower rates of eczema, and an association between food allergies and the development of respiratory allergies compared with previous reports.
David A. Hill, MD, PhD, from the Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and colleagues used a care network of 1,050,061 urban and suburban children to examine the rates of childhood allergic conditions using data from healthcare provider-based diagnoses.....

The cleaner your home, the greater your chances for asthma
Your immune system isn’t as strong as it could be
When we were kids, we barely spent any time inside. If the sun was shining, we were out playing… and most likely getting pretty dirty.
Nowadays, kids are sitting inside their air-conditioned homes… eyes glued to their phones… their pale skin soaked in hand sanitizers. They’re being treated with “kid gloves” — and nearly every inch of them is under some kind of protective covering.
Their immune systems haven’t had anything to fight — probably ever — so they don’t know WHAT to do if they ever do encounter something that might cause an infection (or even just a little irritation).....

Are sleep apnea and asthma linked to keratoconus?
An analysis of insurance data suggests keratoconus might be linked to sleep apnea and asthma, among other known connections.
The eye disorder causes the cornea to become thin and cone-shaped and can result in extreme decreased vision and increased sensitivity to glare and light. If keratoconus becomes too severe to correct and corneal perforation is at risk, corneal transplant becomes necessary.....

Asthma attacks peak when kids go back to school
WATERLOO REGION — Going back to school can be an especially tough time for students with asthma.
September is when asthma flare-ups peak, sending thousands of schoolchildren to emergency departments in the weeks after school begins.
Upwards of a quarter of children's hospital admissions for asthma in Canada occur in September.....

Philly's smog sickens thousands of city's asthmatic kids, report says
Contaminated, smoggy air is directly worsening asthma conditions in thousands of Philadelphia's children, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental group.
An estimated 12,206 childhood asthma attacks occur in Philadelphia each year because of smog produced by nearby gas and oil operations, the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) announced.
Gas and oil production such as that which occurs at refineries around Philly create the ground-level ozone that is the main constituent of smog, according to CATF.

The World Anti-Doping Code: can you have asthma and still be an elite athlete?
The World Anti-Doping Code (the Code) does place some restrictions on prescribing inhaled ß2-agonists, but these can be overcome without jeopardising the treatment of elite athletes with asthma. While the Code permits the use of inhaled glucocorticoids without restriction, oral and intravenous glucocorticoids are prohibited, although a mechanism exists that allows them to be administered for acute severe asthma.Although asthmatic athletes achieved outstanding sporting success during the 1950s and 1960s before any anti-doping rules existed, since introduction of the Code’s policies on some drugs to manage asthma results at the Olympic Games have revealed that athletes with confirmed asthma/airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) have outperformed their non-asthmatic rivals.....

Back to School Checklist for Children With Asthma
With school starting again it’s time to think about checklists for items like school supplies and clothing.
But the American Lung Association says children with asthma should have a checklist for that as well. Health officials say asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization among kids under the age of 15.
“Proper treatment of asthma is crucial, but it’s also important for parents and children to learn asthma management skills that will lead to better asthma control and improved quality of life,” said Keith Robinson, MD, University of Vermont Children’s Hospital pediatric pulmonologist.....

As-needed use of acetaminophen was well-tolerated and did not increase asthma exacerbations or worsen asthma control in young children with mild persistent asthma compared to use of ibuprofen, according to recent research.

Asthma care costs UK at least £1.1 billion each year, study shows
Asthma costs the UK health service at least £1.1 billion each year, researchers have estimated.
The findings are the result of the most comprehensive study of the state of asthma in UK to date.
Researchers found that at least three people die each day from asthma attacks. Experts say the majority of asthma deaths are preventable and greater focus on basic care is needed to cut the rates of severe attacks.....

Feeding the Horse With Asthma
Last fall and winter my horse had a sporadic cough and sometimes it felt like he couldn’t get enough air when we were working. My vet said that he most likely has allergies and mild recurrent airway obstruction. Deaths from asthma on the rise in Nottingham
Asthma deaths are on the rise in Nottingham, with the highest figures being reported in 14 years.
In the city area alone, 14 people died from the condition as "an underlying cause" in 2015 – up from eight the previous year and the highest since 2001.
Manik Arora, GP and NHS Nottingham City CCG's clinical lead for long term conditions said there was "no single reason" that the number has increased, but said the group was doing all it could to support people with asthma and help prevent it getting worse.....

Asthma is caused by an inflammation and obstruction of the bronchial tubes, the tubes that help the lung inhale and exhale air. In 2009 the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology stated that one in every 12 people in the United States had one diagnosis of asthma, compared to one in 14 in 2001. During an asthma attack, the muscles about the bronchial tubes tighten and swell, which narrows the air passages and hence makes it difficult for the person to breathe.....

Kids with food allergies at increased risk of asthma, rhinitis, finds a new study
Risk of allergic diseases increases with the number of food allergies a child might have, say researchers
Children with a history of food allergy have a high risk of developing asthma and allergic rhinitis, a new US study has warned.
The risk increases with the number of food allergies a child might have, said researchers from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
“Eczema, asthma and allergic rhinitis are among the most common childhood medical conditions in the US,” said lead researcher David A Hill, an allergy and immunology fellow. The study is a retrospective analysis of the electronic health records of more than one million urban and suburban children in the CHOP Care Network from 2001 to 2015.....
