Simple saliva test for asthma being developed
A saliva test for asthma developed by British scientists could provide a simple and more effective way to identify and monitor the condition.
The lung function tests currently used can be inaccurate and other procedures involving blood or urine samples may be distressing for children.
Testing saliva for signature "biomarkers" - chemicals linked to asthma - could be carried out easily without upsetting even the very youngest patients.....

Probiotics Do Not Prevent URTIs in Those With Asthma
Daily probiotic use does not reduce winter antibiotic prescriptions for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in patients with asthma, according to results from a randomized controlled, parallel-group pragmatic study.
"These results differ from previous findings in controlled trials mainly involving younger children that probiotics reduce respiratory tract infections and resulting antibiotic prescription rates, and they cast doubt on the reproducibility of those findings in older children and adults with asthma using information leaflets," the researchers write.....

Vitamin D and antibody injections can diminish asthma attacks
Asthma is a respiratory condition associated with hypersensitivity on exposure to allergens such as pollen and dust. It is a chronic condition that presents in the form of symptoms such as wheezing, dyspnea, and coughing.
In certain circumstances, these symptoms may get progressively worse and can degenerate into an “asthma attack.” Whilst some asthma attacks may require hospital admission, typically these attacks can be managed by the use of an inhaler which dilates airways and thus facilitates breathing.....

Makeup of bacteria in infant’s gut boost up the risks of allergy and asthma
Can you forecast whether an infant will have hypersensitivity or not? Researchers have found a significant indicator. According to a recently held medical study, a moderately unique variation from the norm in the makeup of germs in a baby’s gut may triple the risks for hypersensitivities and asthma in adolescence. A huge number of microscopic organisms and growths can be found in everybody’s gut and less than 10 percent of infants, may undermine immune system function.....

Is Your Asthma Flaring Up? Cockroaches May be the Cause
Did you know cockroaches can aggravate asthma? Here’s how.
Unless you’re an entomologist, it’s likely that you’re not fond of cockroaches. Most people would agree with you on this point. Cockroaches aren’t very easy on the eyes, and they’re associated with many negative things such as rotting food, unsanitary conditions and even disease.
What many people don’t realize about cockroaches, however, is that these insects can aggravate asthma and cause allergic reactions. That’s right. You now have one more reason to dislike the cockroach.....

Food Allergies Linked to Raised Risk of Asthma, Hay Fever
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 14, 2016 -- Children with food allergies are at increased risk for asthma and hay fever, and the risk rises with the number of food allergies, new research shows.
The study included information on nearly 363,000 children and teens. Half of the kids were white, and 40 percent were black. Between 7 and 8 percent had one food allergy.
"For patients with an established diagnosis of food allergy, 35 percent went on to develop asthma," said study senior author Dr. Jonathan Spergel. He is chief of the division of allergy and immunology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.....

How Can You Avoid an Asthma Attack?
An allergy and asthma specialist says: The main cause of asthma is inflammation of the airways, so anything that reduces inflammation may help. Vitamin D can increase antiinflammatory molecules in the body, it may also reduce the risk of getting viral infections like colds, which are the most common triggers of asthma. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with hyper-reactive airways (when air passages narrow suddenly), lower lung function and poor asthma control.....

Asthma: It Can Begin Before Birth, Study Finds
Childhood asthma may be predestined from the time a fetus is in the first trimester, according to a new study presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress earlier this month in London, UK.
“First trimester fetal size – a surrogate for fetal lung size – is relevant to symptoms of respiratory physiology through to 15 years of age,” said lead researcher, Stephen Turner MD, who is a senior lecturer at The Institute of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Aberdeen in the U.K. “These findings suggest that antenatal factors contribute to life-long respiratory wellbeing,” he added.....

Scientists have found a way to predict whether babies will develop asthma or allergies
For a while now, it’s been clear to scientists that the collection of bacteria that dwells in our digestive tract plays a part in the way we break down food, respond to infections, and even our moods. But these associations have, so far, been just links, and not predictors.
Now, though, scientists have found that a particular pattern characterized by a lack of bacterial diversity in a baby’s gut microbiome can help predict whether or not she develops asthma or allergies later in life.....

More Evidence Obesity Is Bigger Asthma Risk for Women
Having been overweight as a child seems to have an opposite opposite effect on controlling asthma in women than in men although researchers aren't sure why.
Growing up as an overweight girl raised the risk of asthma hospitalization in women, while in men being an underweight boy raised that risk.
A Danish study reported that overweight women until the age of 45 have a 39 percent increased risk of hospitalization for asthma if they had an above average BMI (body mass index) when they were between seven and 13 years old.....
