Call for action as asthma deaths rise to highest in a decade

Campaigners have called for “rapid action” after the number of asthma deaths in Scotland rose to the highest level for more than a decade. A total of 122 people died from an asthma attack last year, an increase of 50 from 2014, figures from the National Records of Scotland show. Women were more than twice as likely to die from an asthma attack, with 87 female deaths and 35 male in 2015.....

Adults with asthma struggle to breathe when they are exposed to dust and allergens. They can exhale without too much difficulty, but their inflamed lungs with narrowed airways make it hard to inhale enough oxygen, and the mucus in their airways leads to coughing.

Asthma grant helps Lynn school nurses clear the air

Lynn Public Schools students are breathing easier thanks to a state grant designed to address asthma and other health issues.
The city is in the third year of a $6 million award from the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund. The fund was established by the Legislature in 2012 to assist Bay State communities reduce healthcare costs by preventing chronic conditions.
Lynn is one of only nine communities and organizations statewide to receive the money, which provides funding to help mitigate chronic diseases, reduce pediatric asthma, hypertension, tobacco and falls among the elderly.

Novartis asthma pill shows promise in small trial

BASEL: The first new asthma pill in decades has produced promising results in a small clinical trial, potentially paving the way for another treatment option for patients by the end of the decade.

'Game-changing' asthma pill could replace inhaler for millions

London - A pill that uses a "twin attack" in treating asthma symptoms could soon become available for adults with severe asthma if further studies continue to go well.
Most of the drugs available for asthma today only ease the symptoms, with some drugs widening the airways, and others using steroids to calm inflammation.
The medication being tested is called Fevipiprant, a twice-daily pill that uses a "twin attack" approach to treating severe asthma.
