Influenza susceptibility higher among patients with asthma
Patients with asthma are at increased risk for more severe influenza disease, according to research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
“The mechanisms underlying the increased susceptibility to viral infections in those with asthma are poorly understood, but it has been suggested that the skewing toward Th2 immunity results in deficient Th1 antiviral immunity,” Ben Nicholas, PhD, from the University of Southampton, and colleagues wrote. “Understanding of antiviral immunity in asthma is also complicated by the immunosuppressive effects of [inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs)]or oral corticosteroids, standard treatments in asthma”......

Nearly 600,000 Asthma Inhalers Recalled By GSK
ZEBULON, N.C. (CBS) – More than 593,000 asthma inhalers in the United States have been recalled because of a problem that could cause them to deliver less medication than intended.
An FDA document indicates the reason for the recall is a “defective delivery system” due to a leak in the Ventolin inhalers. Reuters reports drugmaker GSK is trying to figure out what caused the problem after an increasing number of complaints, and is pulling the inhalers from hospitals, pharmacies, retailers and wholesalers.....

Inmate dies after inhaler confiscated
A Pulaski County jail inmate suffered a fatal asthma attack in December after deputies confiscated her inhaler, a death that has since led the sheriff's office to change its policy on the device.
Jail records released last week under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act list an inhaler among the items that jailers took from Sharon Lavette Alexander when she was booked in the jail the night of Dec. 13 on a robbery charge.
Jailers found Alexander, 41, of Little Rock, unconscious in her cell the next night. She was taken to UAMS Medical Center and pronounced dead.....

Respiratory disease continues to make a substantial contribution to New Zealand’s health burden.
The recently released Impact of Respiratory Disease in New Zealand: 2016 Update, commissioned by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ, reported that respiratory disease accounted for one in 10 overnight hospitalisations.
Over 521,000 people take medication for asthma, and over 35,000 New Zealanders are estimated to be living with severe COPD.
Due to the staggering statistics in New Zealand, the Foundation urges all registered health professionals to undertake training in Asthma and COPD.....

Scientists unveiled a "radical" approach that could revolutionise asthma treatment, using subtle changes in diet to help keep the respiratory disease under control.
The research, described as a "world first", was presented for the first time at the annual meeting of the Thoracic Society for Australia and New Zealand.
"This is the first time anyone has looked at the impact of altering the gut microbiome on asthma control in humans," said the society's president Professor Peter Gibson.....

The year 8 pupil was airlifted to hospital from Westborough High School in Dewsbury
Dozens of well-wishers have spoken in support of a young schoolgirl who was rushed to hospital by air ambulance after suffering a suspected asthma attack.
The Year 8 pupil was airlifted from Westborough High School in Dewsbury to hospital yesterday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the school said that the situation remained the same this morning.
A statement published on the school website yesterday said: “The air ambulance attended at school and the child is now in a serious condition in hospital.....
