Early Virus Raises Asthma Risk in Certain Kids: Study
Infants with a particular gene variant appear more vulnerable after infection
FRIDAY, Aug. 26, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- A common genetic variation significantly boosts the odds of asthma in children who've had a severe respiratory illness at a young age, researchers report.

Sweden: Giving Healthy Skiers Asthma Medication Is "A Dangerous Path"
The revelation that Norway may have offered healthy skiers asthma medication last season has struck like a bomb in the ski world, with Norway trying to defend it's position against criticism from other countries.
On the one side, Norwegian National Team Head Coach Vidar Løfshus believes that it is reasonable for skiers to take asthma medication as a preventive measure. "It is for active people to be able to do their best" says Lofshus. Asthma Predisposition High Among Children With Food Allergies
Taking advantage of network data on over a million children, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) system was recently able to conduct a large, informative study on the most common chronic health afflictions that impact children.
From the wide swath of data, researchers assembled a closed-birth cohort of nearly 30,000 children, observed continually for their first 5 years of life, and a larger cross-sectional cohort of over 300,000, all observed for at least a year. The study claims to be “one of the largest primary care cohorts ever assembled to describe epidemiologic characteristics of healthcare provider-diagnosed eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergy”.....

Late-onset asthma may increase risk for CV events
Adults with late-onset asthma were 57% more likely to experience a CV event compared with those without asthma, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Using the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort, researchers evaluated 1,269 participants who were free of CVD at baseline and were followed for a mean of 14 years for CV events including angina, cardiac revascularization, CV death, HF and stroke. The mean age of the cohort was 47 years.....

Late-onset asthma linked to cardiovascular disease risk
Researchers think the conditions are linked because inflammation caused by both is similar, but say more research is required.
MADISON, Wis., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Although doctors have theorized links between asthma and cardiovascular disease, new research suggests patients with late-onset asthma are especially at risk for heart disease and stroke.
Patients with adult-onset asthma are at significant risk for developing cardiovascular disease, suggesting links between the inflammation caused by both conditions combines for a greater health risk, researchers at the University of Wisconsin report in the Journal of the American Heart Association.....

Asthma and allergies are less common among Amish children because of exposure to animal microbes, scientists say
(NaturalNews) Many have speculated about the causes behind the exceptional health outcomes in the Amish community, where autoimmune disease, allergies, asthma and other chronic health conditions are virtually nonexistent. One formidable explanation is that the Amish don't vaccinate their children, while another recently highlighted in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), suggests that because they're exposed to an array of environmental microbes practically from birth, the Amish possess unique immune superiority not seen in the general population.....
