Asthma sufferer from Newhall says new scheme in South Derbyshire will save lives
An asthma sufferer whose condition means she struggles to climb the stairs, unload the washing machine and clean the house has praised a new scheme in South Derbyshire which could save hundreds of lives.
Lynn Farmer, 46, of Newhall, was diagnosed with asthma at 21 years old, but her health got progressively worse and in 2009 she had to quit her job as an estate agent due to her asthma.
Having experienced hundreds of asthma attacks and several stays in hospital as a result of her condition, Miss Farmer believes the new Improving Asthma Care Together scheme (ImpACT) launched in South Derbyshire by Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will have a huge impact on asthma sufferers.....

Airway Differences May Explain Why Asthma Can Be More Serious for Blacks
FRIDAY, Jan. 13, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Differences in airway inflammation may be one reason why black people with asthma are less responsive to treatment and more likely to die from the disease than white people, a new study suggests.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease, and airway inflammation is a major component of asthma. The inflammation causes the airways to swell and become more sensitive, which eventually leads to symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath, according to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.....

What to do when someone has an asthma attack in the gym
You often see people around you in the gym breathing heavily, with flared nostrils and sweaty foreheads. But how do you know if it's just harmless panting or if they're having an asthma attack?
With people flooding the gym to carry out their “new year, new me” resolutions, you may be distracted by the loud panting of the person on the treadmill next to you. But have you ever stopped to check if they are okay?
According to the Global Asthma Report of 2014, South Africa has the largest asthma mortality rates in the world and 3,9 million people in the country suffer from this respiratory condition.....

South African student creates breakthrough sensor for asthma
Take a slow, deep breath. Imagine holding a long straw; so thin that a toothpick wouldn’t fit through it. Imagine clenching this thin straw between your lips without any leaks. Now try to breathe through that small opening between your pursed lips, using no more, and no less than the tiny gap.
THIS is what asthma feels like, except an asthmatic can’t control it, and – more often than not – they can’t predict when the next attack will happen. Until now.....

Asthma Sufferers Take Caution: Sydney Gets An Air Quality Warning
Sydney is predicted to experience poor air quality on Wednesday.
Authorities are urging people with respiratory conditions to take caution with high air pollution levels amid poor air quality.
The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage have advised NSW Health that Sydney is predicted to experience poor air quality on Wednesday due to high ozone levels.

Change Your Environment and Breathe Easier When It Comes to Childhood Asthma (Infographic)
Childhood asthma is a condition that's tough for both parents and kids to cope with--when their lungs and airways get inflamed, youngsters can experience attacks of coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing. Those attacks are not only disruptive, with the potential to interrupt sleep and outdoor activities, and necessitate extra doctor visits, but also scary if they are severe. And while a recent Pediatrics study reports that U.S. childhood asthma rates are starting to plateau, it also notes that cases are still on the rise for some groups of children, such as teens and kids living in poverty. The study's authors said that exposure to environmental factors such as air pollution, secondhand smoke and mold may be a big reason why the rate of asthma cases hasn't decreased among the poorest children.....

If you’re one of 5.4 million Brits struggling to live with asthma, breathe easy and check you haven’t been misdiagnosed
CURRENTLY, there are 5.4million Brits living with asthma. And, according to Asthma UK, the nation’s asthmatics are getting a raw deal.
Apparently, some of them are not receiving the treatment or checks they need.
Worse still, the charity also pointed out that red wine, beer and cider can trigger attacks. Which means they can’t even drown their sorrows.
So if you’re one of the wheezy millions, it may be time to ask yourself a few key questions.
And the most basic is: “Have I really got asthma?”.....

Study links antacids in pregnancy to asthma in kids
Children of women who take heartburn medicine during pregnancy are a third more likely to develop asthma, according to a study published Monday.
However, it remains unclear whether the medication itself, or some other factor, is responsible for that increased risk, researchers reported in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
"This association does not prove that the medicines caused asthma in these children," said Aziz Sheikh, co-director of the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research at the University of Edinburgh and co-author of the study.....

Heartburn drugs for pregnant mothers linked to baby asthma
Mothers who take heartburn medication during pregnancy may be putting their babies at a greater risk of developing asthma, new research has found.
Analysis of 1.3 million children revealed those whose mothers were prescribed drugs to deal with acid reflux in pregnancy were more likely to be treated for asthma in childhood.
The condition is very common in expectant mothers because of hormonal changes and pressure on the stomach from the developing foetus.....

Trouble breathing: Vocal cord dysfunction or asthma?
Trouble breathing, wheezing and coughing are common asthma symptoms. They’re also symptoms of another breathing problem called vocal cord dysfunction, or abnormal closing of the vocal cords.
Both conditions can lead to decreased athletic performance and efficiency.
Despite the similarities, it’s important to get the right diagnosis to help you breathe and perform better, said Katie Luttropp, a Marshfield Clinic athletic trainer. Greater awareness will help patients recognize when their symptoms point to vocal cord dysfunction.....

Causes
It isn’t definite as to what causes asthma in some and not in others, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is a probable reason. Factors that trigger asthma is varied, and is subjective. Some common causes of asthma include:.....

Asthma - 5 Homeopathic Remedies to Help You Treat it
We take the act of breathing for granted, but for many people this simple action can be quite difficult. Difficulty breathing is one of the characteristic symptoms of asthma. This is because of an inflamed, narrow airway. Asthma can be allergic, hereditary, emotional or occupational in nature and can significantly lower the quality of a person’s life.
Homoeopathy is a holistic form of treatment that addresses not only the symptoms of a problem, but its root cause. This form of treatment takes into consideration the physical, mental and emotional state of a person. It has negligible side effects and hence can be prescribed to people of all ages.....

Doctoral student wins prize for asthma innovation
PRETORIA – A young doctoral student has shown that South Africa's at the forefront of medical innovation.
A PhD student at the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Health Sciences, Moses Kebalepile's won a top international prize for developing an early warning system for asthma sufferers, which he's named the Asthma Grid.
The student believes the invention could revolutionise the self-management of asthma.
"I think the ecosystem of innovation and technology in the country is evolving, but we're not evolving rapidly enough. Innovation and technology is the substance of our economic development. And I just want to encourage structures out there to perhaps identify these ideas at an early stage and maybe invest in supporting them earlier," he said.....

Why is asthma worse in black patients?
African Americans may be less responsive to asthma treatment and more likely to die from the condition, in part, because they have a unique type of airway inflammation, according to a study. The study is one of the largest and most diverse trials conducted in the U.S. on race and asthma, with 26 percent of the patients self-identifying as African American. Researchers found that black patients were more likely to exhibit eosinophilic airway inflammation than whites, despite taking comparable doses of asthma medication, such as inhaled corticosteroids.....
