Air quality warning for Victorian asthma sufferers
Melbourne's air quality will continue to be so poor over the weekend, the Environmental Protection Agency has issued a warning for asthma sufferers.
On Friday morning, air quality tracker AirVisualEarth showed that Melbourne's PM2.5 levels (smoke particles) were higher than those in Shanghai, China.
The EPA issued the warning, saying there would be poor air quality in parts of Geelong, Melbourne and the Latrobe Valley.
People at risk include those over 65, children 14 years and younger, pregnant women and those with existing heart or lung conditions.....

Bitter Compounds Could Be The Future of Preventing And Treating Asthma
Researchers have found that a flavouring found in tonic water is able prevent asthma, as well as limit characteristics of mice that already have the disease.
This could be a game-changer for the 300 million people worldwide that live with asthma – a disease which currently can be managed but not cured.
The researchers, from the University of Technology Sydney in Australia, found that chloroquine and quinine, substances that stimulate bitter taste buds were very successful at preventing and mitigating asthma in mice models and human cell culture.....

Study find no link between vitamin D levels and asthma, dermatitis
Despite previous reports, vitamin D levels are not linked to asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergies according to a new Canadian study.
Researchers from McGill University and the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital, both in Montreal, looked at genetic and health data on more than 100,000 participants from previous large-scale studies.
They were trying to determine whether genetic changes associated with vitamin D levels lead to a greater chance of developing asthma, atopic dermatitis (an itchy inflammation of the skin) or high IgE levels (an immune molecule linked to allergies). Previous research has linked low vitamin D levels to all three of the conditions.....

Asthma patients breathe easier with new bluetooth inhalers
Asthma attacks come with little warning and are often triggered by invisible particles in the air. Now, thanks to advances in Bluetooth technology, smartphones have become the newest weapon in the fight against asthma.
Propeller Health, a Wisconsin-based company, wants to help those with respiratory problems by supplementing medicine with technology. The firm has wired an inhaler with a Bluetooth transmitter to communicate with an asthma patient’s smartphone. This sensor activates when the inhaler is pressed, setting into motion a process that records the exact time and location of a patient’s asthma attack on a smartphone app. Doctors can view this data and see, not only how frequently the patient suffers attacks, but also tease apart the environmental factors that caused the distress.....

Climate Change Could Increase Allergy-Related Asthma ER Visits
If greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase through the end of this century, ER visits for allergic asthma could increase by 10 percent in the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast combined.
More children could wind up in hospital emergency rooms suffering from allergy-induced asthma if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and cause longer oak pollen seasons, according to a new study.....

Allergy and Asthma Patients Flock to Emergency Rooms
Warmer winters are driving up oak pollen, sending more people to the hospital
The sneezing, watery eyes and runny noses from seasonal allergies are poised to land more people in the emergency room as temperatures rise, researchers have found.
In a study published online yesterday in GeoHealth, scientists reported that warmer winters resulting from climate change will lead to more intense pollen from oak trees, spelling more misery for allergy sufferers.....

Low vitamin D does not raise risk of asthma or dermatitis, study shows
Previous research has suggested that a low level of vitamin D may raise the risk of asthma, dermatitis, and certain allergies. A new study looks at the genetic data available to see if genetic variations support the conclusions of previous research.
Some previous studies have associated low circulating levels of vitamin D with an increased risk of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and higher levels of total immunoglobulin E (IgE).
A team of researchers - led by Dr. Brent Richards, of the McGill University and the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital, both in Montreal, Canada - set out to determine whether or not there is a genetic background to these alleged correlations.....

Why Women Are More Likely To Get Asthma Than Men
Last year, Melbourne, Australia, experienced an unprecedented “thunderstorm asthma” event. Some 10,000 people were rushed to the hospital, struggling to breathe, with at least nine deaths. No breakdown has been published, but if this resembled most other such events, two-thirds of those affected were women. Adult women are roughly twice as likely to suffer asthma as men, even though boys get it more frequently than girls. Now, a research institution based in the heart of Melbourne has laid the blame for this difference with testosterone.....

AstraZeneca’s PhIII bid on asthma drug tralokinumab flops, and that’s no surprise
Maybe the best way to look at AstraZeneca R&D now is by dividing the research group into two big buckets: cancer and everything else. That “everything else” group was just hit with a widely expected Phase III failure that the drug giant can ill afford as it struggles to make a convincing case for a desperately needed turnaround.....

Testosterone explains why women more prone to asthma
An international research team has revealed for the first time that testosterone protects males against developing asthma, helping to explain why females are two times more likely to develop asthma than males after puberty. The study showed that testosterone suppresses the production of a type of immune cell that triggers allergic asthma. The finding may lead to new, more targeted asthma treatments.....

Asthma among us: Trouble in the air, inside and out
On Tuesday public health officials observed World Asthma Day, but Pittsburghers could not celebrate. The rate of childhood asthma is alarmingly high here, and there is a direct link between asthma and airborne pollution.
Officials said that 13 percent of our county’s children suffer from asthma, while the rate for the nation as a whole is only 8.4 percent. The percentage of children and adults with the condition has been increasing over the past decade, according to researchers.....

Suns won't risk players with asthma for China
GOLD Coast players with breathing conditions like asthma will not board the plane to China next week for the historic clash with Port Adelaide, Suns coach Rodney Eade says.
Most of northern China, including Shanghai where next Sunday afternoon's game will take place, is experiencing unhealthy pollution levels after a thick sandstorm swept through the region.
Eade said those with breathing difficulties would not be risked.
"That smog … hopefully there's no respiratory problems," Eade told Triple M on Sunday.....

Asthma treatment: New drug IMPROVES control to help sufferers swerve DEATH
ASTHMA affects 5.4 million people in the UK, and someone has a life-threatening asthma attack every ten seconds - but a new drug could help sufferers control the condition.
It’s a chronic lung condition inflaming and narrowing the airways, causing periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing.
Sometimes it can trigger an asthma attack, when symptoms worsen due to the lining of the airways becoming swollen or inflamed.
However, a new way to treat the condition has been discovered in a new study.
The drug - Relvar Ellipta - was found by the Salford Lung Study (SLS) to improve asthma control in patients much more than their counterparts who continued taking their usual medicines.....

The Best Food For Cats With Asthma – a Basic Guide
There’s a whole lot of conflicting information out there about feline diets, but not a great deal about the best food for cats with asthma. Why is this? Well, we’re special, us asthma cat parents – only about 1% of cats are asthmatic, so in the grand scheme of things there really aren’t that many of us.
I’ve done a fair bit of research and a bit of experimentation (sorry Sparrow) into the whole asthmatic cat food situation and I’ve found a few things that I agree with, quite a lot that I disagree with and a bit that I’m changing my mind about.....
