Children with mild, persistent asthma did not have worse asthma symptoms after taking acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) for pain or fever, compared to using ibuprofen (e.g., Advil), according to the results of a randomized, double-blind clinical trial recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Previous observational reports have linked the use of acetaminophen with asthma exacerbations, however well-designed clinical trials evaluating the association were lacking.....

Here's how family-centered education can get asthma under control

Malizy and Craig Scruggs thought their daughter Madison, 11, just suffered from allergies -- until January 2015, when an asthma attack sent her to the emergency room, followed by three days in the hospital.
"It was a scary time," said Malizy Scruggs. "That's when we began to take her asthma seriously."
This month, many families will find themselves in the same frightening situation. Asthma, which affects more than 6 million children in the U.S., is the third leading cause of hospitalizations among children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And September is a particularly bad month, because kids are back in school, where they're exposed to cold viruses, and ragweed pollen levels tend to be high.....

Wake Forest study shows drug therapy combination for asthma patients is safe

A recent post-marketing study conducted by the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center showed that a combination drug therapy for the treatment of asthma is both safe and effective.
The study was mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The therapy itself consisted of a long-acting beta agonist, called formoterol, added to an inhaled glucocorticoid called budesonide.
“Our study showed no significant increase in serious adverse events in the combination therapy,” Stephen Peters, professor of pulmonary, critical care, allergy and immunologic diseases at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, said. “A large number of studies have shown that this type of combination therapy really helps asthma control and decreases symptoms.....

Asthma gene’s effect on respiratory symptoms in infancy depends on breastfeeding status

Infants who have a genetic profile linked with asthma risk could be protected against respiratory symptoms if they are breastfeed, according to a new study.
The study is presented today (4 September, 2016) at the European Respiratory Society's International Congress.
"Our study is the first to show that breastfeeding can modify the effect of asthma-related genetic profiles on respiratory symptoms in the first year of life", commented Dr Olga Gorlanova, from the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB), and the University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland.....

Vitamin D 'significantly reduces severe asthma attacks'

Taking Vitamin D supplements in addition to asthma medication appears to cut the risk of severe asthma attacks, a review of evidence suggests.
An independent review by the Cochrane research body of nine clinical trials found it also cut the rate of asthma attacks needing steroid treatment.
But researchers say it is unclear whether it only helps patients who are vitamin D deficient.
They say more studies are needed before they can give patients official advice.
They recommend talking to a GP or pharmacist to get advice before taking a vitamin D supplement.....

AstraZeneca offers some mixed PhIII results for severe asthma, while Roche rival flounders

AstraZeneca posted some mixed, though generally positive, data from two big Phase III studies of benralizumab, its IL-5 contender for the highly competitive market for severe asthma. A high placebo response seriously eroded one set of late-stage data. But the therapy appears headed to an approval — even as Roche was practically given the kiss of death for a rival late-stage drug.....

Those in regions with limited sunlight tended to have far greater occurrences of asthma than those who lived in sunny regions like Southern California.....

Viral Detection May Lead to Asthma Treatment Failure in Pediatric Patients

A recent study found that viral detection, rather than age, determined the lack of response to asthma treatment in young children.
A 2009 study suggested that preschool aged children did not respond to the standard treatment for viral-triggered asthma attacks because of their age. This population makes up a majority of asthma-related hospitalizations, so findings from this study were significant.....

New Discovery Could Improve Asthma Treatment

It is widely known that eosinophils contribute to inflammation and exacerbation of the immune response in asthma. However, researchers in a recent study discovered an eosinophil that potentially plays a protective role in the disease.
In patients with asthma, inflammatory eosinophil cells, granulocytes produced in the bone marrow, are recruited to the lungs during an allergic reaction. The eosinophils then participate in the asthmatic reaction.....
