'Asthma is a killer - it took away my miracle daughter'

Lisa Dennis is looking at photos of her daughter Olivia - a blonde girl with a radiant smile.
These are special moments, frozen in time. Olivia died four years ago, aged 10, after having an asthma attack.
Her parents did not even know their gymnastics-loving daughter had the condition.
But Olivia is not the only child to lose their life to asthma.
According to the latest data for England and Wales, 37 children and teenagers died from the disease in 2014.
The figure has risen over the past five years. But many of these deaths are thought to be preventable.....

Protective Association Identified for Asthma Against Sepsis

THURSDAY, June 22, 2017 (HealthDay News) — For patients with infections, those with asthma have reduced risk of sepsis, according to a letter to the editor published online May 22 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Joe G. Zein, M.D., from the Cleveland Clinic, and colleagues examined the incidence of sepsis and/or sepsis-related mortality in individuals with asthma, characterized by activation of pro-inflammatory pathways, using data from five datasets for patients hospitalized with pneumonia, urinary tract infection, or skin and soft tissue infection. Data were included from the 2012 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-National Inpatient Sample (NIS), the 2007, 2008, and 2011 NIS, and Cleveland Clinic Health System admissions between 2010 and 2014.....

Usually, they are hated for charging people with life-threatening allergies extortionate amounts of money for the only drug on the market that can help them. But a new report points out that there are many other reasons hate the company. Namely contributing to air pollution while they sell drugs to help people with respiratory problems.....

Racism tied to worse asthma symptoms for black youth

(Reuters Health) - African-American children and young adults with a hard-to-treat type of asthma may have a more difficult time keeping symptoms in check when they have experienced racial discrimination, a recent study suggests.
Researchers asked 576 black youth in the U.S. with asthma whether they had been hassled, made to feel inferior or prevented from doing something because of their race, ethnicity, color or language in situations at school, in medical settings or at restaurants and stores. Roughly half of them reported experiencing some form of discrimination at some point in their lives.....

EPA tweets warning about incense and candle smoke while dismantling air quality protections
At the same time, the agency is delaying regulations meant to cut down on dangerous pollutants.

The Environmental Protection Agency is charged with the protection of two things: the environment and public health. So it’s no surprise that the agency would use it’s social media presence to tweet about asthma, something that as of 2009, affected 1 in 10 children and 1 in 12 adults in the United States.
Asthma can be triggered by a number of irritants, from pollen and dust spores to pollution in the air. And, as the agency that regulates air pollution, it seems like an EPA concerned about asthma would draw the connection between asthma attacks and pollution such as smog, ozone, and particulate matter.....

Camp Tyler's Asthma Camp teaches children to manage symptoms and thrive

Deselah Hawkins runs and plays with a yellow bag around her neck at Camp Tyler’s annual Asthma Camp. That little yellow bag means a lot of things to the 11-year-old - it’s lifesaving asthma medication, it’s a lesson to help her learn responsibility in managing her symptoms and it's a promise that she can be a normal child.
For more than 30 years children from all over the state have flocked to the camp, where they get a traditional camping experience while learning how to manage symptoms.
Members of Deselah’s family had attended the camp as children and recommended it to her parents. Pipper Binion-Stanberry, 10, said her mother had attended as well.....

Case study: Asthma exacerbation with heroin use
The case of an asthma death associated with heroin use.

This case came to light as a part of my work on the clinical governance board for Blenheim, a charity providing support to drug and alcohol users, but I believe the learning points are highly relevant for GPs with or without special interests in substance misuse.....

Why Asthma Is a Housing Issue

A bill introduced to New York’s City Council would compel landlords to eradicate mold, vermin, and other asthma triggers that are particularly pervasive in low-rent units.
Mold has been growing in Fabian Bravo’s apartment in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn for years. Because his landlord has failed to fix the problem, Bravo has repeatedly notified New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, which puts pressure on landlords to make repairs and issues violations if they don’t. Bravo has even gone to Housing Court over the issue.....

Asthma Quality Improvement versus Research - Both Valuable

A group at a children's hospital wanted to improve their asthma management protocols, but the report of this intervention seems not to know whether it's a quality improvement or a research study. Does it matter?
The study authors state that this was a retrospective study at a single children's hospital, looking at asthma care before and after implementing a critical asthma (children requiring continuous nebulization or more advanced treatments) Standardized Clinical Assessment and Management Plan (SCAMP). They found that utilizing the SCAMP resulted in children receiving less continuous albuterol aerosolizations (median of 21 hours down to 14 hours post SCAMP) with no increase in adverse events or readmissions, all good stuff.....

A new warning system that would send WA asthma sufferers personalised alerts about air pollution and pollen is being investigated.
It comes after parts of Perth were blanketed by smog from prescribed burns being carried out in the cooler weather.
Asthma WA chief operating officer Ian Craig said early talks were being set up with government agencies to work out how to combine weather forecasting with information on controlled burns and bushfires.
Mr Craig said an early warning system for asthmatics would save lives, with more than 400 Australians dying from asthma each year.....

Finnish study examines links between type 1 diabetes and asthma

New light has been shed on the association between type 1 diabetes and asthma by an international study.
The two conditions have been linked by previous studies but now research from Finland suggests having asthma increases the risk of type 1 diabetes by 41 per cent. Those with type 1 diabetes, however, have a decreased risk of developing asthma by 18 per cent.
Dr Johanna Metsala, from the National Institute for Health and Welfare based in Helsinki, is the lead researcher in a study which has just been presented at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Congress 2017.....

A new report found young people with the respiratory illness are on average using their inhalers just a quarter of the recommended time because of social embarrassment.

Letter to the editor: Mainers with asthma need Sen. Collins to protect Medicaid

As the U.S. Senate considers the future of health care in the United States, we need Sen. Susan Collins to prioritize the needs of patients with asthma in Maine and fight to keep – not cut – Medicaid. People with asthma simply cannot risk going without health insurance.
Medicaid is a crucial source of coverage for patients with serious and chronic health care needs, especially for children and adults with asthma. Nearly half of children with asthma are covered by Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Health care is a literally a matter of life and death for people with asthma.....

Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath

EXETER – Not every child who wheezes, or coughs has asthma, but some do, and pediatricians say it is a condition that needs to be treated.
Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. In people with asthma, the airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness.....

The Coal-Asthma Connection

The organized enemies of coal are at bottom enemies of carbon dioxide (CO2). Enemies of CO2 are believers in the greenhouse gas catastrophic global warming hypothesis. That hypothesis is and always has been poorly supported by evidence. The “evidence” is really computer models that make predictions. Those predictions have failed to materialize.
Coal is the hydrocarbon fuel with the most carbon and the least hydrogen. Thus, when coal is burned as fuel, more CO2 is released to the atmosphere than would be the case if natural gas were used. The main use of coal is generating electricity.....
