Connected Devices Double Symptom-Free Days for Asthma Patients
Connected devices that delivered data to smartphones helped improve community health for patients with asthma and COPD.
June 30, 2017 - By incorporating connected devices and sensor applications into a community wide wellness program, the city of Louisville, KY, doubled the amount of symptom-free days for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). The Air Louisville program took place over a two-year period from 2015 to June 2017. The project was a collaboration between Propeller Health, who provided the mHealth sensor, the Louisville Metro office of Civic Innovation, and the Institute for Health Air Water and Soil. The program enrolled 1,147 participants, collected 570 patient years of data, 251,000 medication puffs, and over 5.4 million environmental data points from Propeller Health’s asthma medication sensor.....

Childhood Asthma Linked to Higher LV Mass in Adulthood
NEW ORLEANS, LA — An analysis from the Bogalusa Heart Study suggests childhood asthma is independently associated with increased left ventricular (LV) mass in adulthood, a well-established predictor of major CV events and death[1].
"The most important implication of this finding is that prevention and treatment of asthma in the early stages of life is very important to reduce the risk of heart disease in adulthood; that is the take-home message," senior author Dr Lu Qi (Tulane University, New Orleans, LA and Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, MA) told theheart.org|Medscape Cardiology.....

New Data Show Triggers, Hope For Asthma Sufferers In Louisville
Thelma Bey is sitting on a bench in Louisville’s Central Park. Nearby, her two grandsons are playing in the splashpad, and Bey is watching them like a hawk.
Wednesday is a good day for Bey. The air is fresh, and the temperature is in the mid-80s. This mild weather dictates whether Bey and the kids can leave her house at all during the day.
Bey is one of the 85,000 people in Jefferson County with asthma. She blames it on the smoking she did when she was younger, but there are other environmental factors that contribute to her asthma she can’t control.....

New study could help those with asthma in Kentuckiana
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Whether you're one of the 89,000 people in the Metro battling asthma or 13.7% of adults in Indiana, researchers say it's important for you to know the quality of air.
AIR Louisville, along with Metro Government and other organizations just finished a two-year study using these smart asthma and COPD inhalers that can connect to your phone, using 1,147 Kentuckiana residents.
“We saw a 74 percent reduction in usage and that's just from people learning so by having this additional information about air quality and knowing, then maybe today I shouldn't go for that bike ride at lunchtime. I have asthma. I know that I'm vulnerable,” Grace Simrall, Chief of Civic Innovation, said.....

Asthma Testing Tool Available At Mercy Clinic
Diagnosing asthma is often made by looking at a patient’s medical history, conducting a physical exam and running tests (peak flow and spirometry) for lung function.
A newer tool that is gaining popularity when the diagnosis of asthma is still uncertain is called fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO).
Jeremy Katcher, MD, with Mercy Clinic Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in Washington, is now using FeNO testing in his office for appropriate patients.....

Hey, there's an app for that: Asthma attack risk covers much of Louisville
Experts have known for years that air pollution can cause asthma attacks and send people to the emergency room for treatment.
But a new high-tech study in Louisville to be made public Wednesday went a step further: It used information from inhalers linked to smartphones and meshed it with a vast store of data on outdoor conditions to identify the city's riskiest neighborhoods for people with asthma.
Western Louisville has long had a reputation for the city's poorest air quality, and the Air Louisville study found areas west of Interstate 65 to have the highest overall risk of asthma symptoms and attacks.....

New breathing test could help prevent asthma attacks in children
Researchers at the University of Aberdeen will study whether using an asthma breathing test can help prevent asthma attacks in children.
The study will use a breath test which monitors their nitric oxide levels to help guide their asthma treatment.
The researchers have been awarded funding by an NIHR and MRC partnership to investigate.
Everybody produces nitric oxide (NO) but people who have asthma produce more of it.
Doctors have previously measured asthma sufferers' NO levels to establish if they need more or less medication, but found that NO measurement was not useful.....

Researchers at Aberdeen University will evaluate children using the test which monitors their nitric oxide (NO) levels. Everyone produces NO, but asthma sufferers produce more. Approximately 368,000 people in Scotland have asthma, including 72,000 children. Doctors previously measured the levels in asthma sufferers to establish if they need more or less medication, but found the measurement was not useful.....

Bronchiectasis Common in Patients With Severe Uncontrolled Asthma, Greek Study Finds
Bronchiectasis is common among patients with severe uncontrolled asthma and might even make their asthma worse, concludes a study by the Sotiria Chest Diseases Hospital in Athens, Greece.
In fact, the type of inflammation seen in patients with both asthma and bronchiectasis might render them insensitive to typical asthma treatment, and testing bronchiectasis-type antibiotics in this group of patients might be a better approach, researchers suggested.
The study, “Investigation of bronchiectasis in severe uncontrolled asthma,” appeared in the Clinical Respiratory Journal.....

Children with asthma at greater risk of developing heart failure
New research shows that individuals with a history of asthma from childhood are at a greater risk of developing shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting and eventually heart failure in adulthood.
New Delhi: New research shows that individuals with a history of asthma from childhood are at a greater risk of developing shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting and eventually heart failure in adulthood.
The researchers found that the common respiratory disease can lead to thickening in the left ventricle - one of the four chambers of the heart responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to tissues all over the body - in a condition known as left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), causing the heart muscle to lose elasticity and eventually fail to pump.....
