Phthalates and Childhood Asthma

Exposure to phthalates, substances used as plasticizers in a large number of consumer goods, can occur by ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. Children––who are uniquely vulnerable to adverse health effects of environmental exposures because of their still-developing neurological, immunological, and respiratory systems—can receive particularly high exposures due to more frequent contact with phthalate-rich surfaces such as plastic toys and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flooring, as well as house dust, which collects phthalates (and other chemicals). Researchers now report an association between phthalate exposure and asthma and allergic disease in a cohort of 10-year-old Norwegian children [EHP 121(2):251–256; Bertelsen et al.].....

Air fresheners can trigger allergies, asthma

ISLAMABAD: People with asthma or allergies may want to avoid air fresheners and other chemicals used to spread fragrant scents through their homes, and their doctors should be aware of the hazards.
"The chemicals in some of these products can trigger the nasal congestion, sneezing and the runny nose," Dr. Stanley Fineman, an allergist with Emory University and the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic. Weather warning for asthma sufferers as large dust storm to sweep across UAE

DUBAI // The weather bureau has warned residents that high winds will wreak havoc this weekend, whipping up a dust storm, bringing temperatures of up to 40°C and rain in the interior.
“Winds at a speed of 35 to 45kph are expected to blow from the south desert over the Empty Quarter to the western side of the UAE,” said a spokesman for the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology. “The high speeds will raise up sands and the visibility will reduce to up to a kilometre.
