Malizy and Craig Scruggs thought their daughter Madison, 11, just suffered from allergies -- until January 2015, when an asthma attack sent her to the emergency room, followed by three days in the hospital.
"It was a scary time," said Malizy Scruggs. "That's when we began to take her asthma seriously."
This month, many families will find themselves in the same frightening situation. Asthma, which affects more than 6 million children in the U.S., is the third leading cause of hospitalizations among children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And September is a particularly bad month, because kids are back in school, where they're exposed to cold viruses, and ragweed pollen levels tend to be high.....

Wake Forest study shows drug therapy combination for asthma patients is safe
A recent post-marketing study conducted by the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center showed that a combination drug therapy for the treatment of asthma is both safe and effective.
The study was mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The therapy itself consisted of a long-acting beta agonist, called formoterol, added to an inhaled glucocorticoid called budesonide.
“Our study showed no significant increase in serious adverse events in the combination therapy,” Stephen Peters, professor of pulmonary, critical care, allergy and immunologic diseases at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, said. “A large number of studies have shown that this type of combination therapy really helps asthma control and decreases symptoms.....

Walton prisoner complained about asthma care weeks before death, inquest hears
A Walton prisoner who died after being found unresponsive in his cell had complained about not getting prescriptions for his asthma just weeks before, an inquest heard.
Ashley Gill, 25, was transferred to HMP Liverpool on April 1 last year, but died less than a month later, on April 29.
The hearing at Gerard Majella Courthouse in Kirkdale was told the dad-of-one suffered from asthma and had been admitted to hospital a number of times in previous years.....
