Professor Links Incidences of Asthma to Unequal Banking Practices in the Mortgage Market
The distribution of asthma incidences in Chicago — a city of great socio-economic segregation — is strongly correlated with the political economy of mortgage markets, argued Prof. Abigail Sewell, sociology, Emory University, in a lecture last Friday.
“Prior research documents higher rates of asthma among blacks, among people living in areas, children, in particular, in predominantly black neighborhoods, as well as among children living in neighborhoods with the whole host of living conditions known to be associated with asthma, such as poor air quality [and] noxious land,” Sewell said.....

Poverty puts kids at greater risk for ADHD, asthma
TUESDAY, Feb. 14, 2017 -- Children in families struggling to make ends meet are developing asthma and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder at faster rates than kids from families with greater means, a new study finds.
On the other hand, kids from wealthier families are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder more often than children in poorer homes. But that likely indicates that those parents have better access to the healthcare services that can uncover an autism diagnosis, the study authors said.
The findings suggest that family income and access to health insurance play a large role in a child's physical and mental health, said lead researcher Dr. Christian Pulcini. He's a pediatrics resident with the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.....

Asthma sufferers 'struggling with their sex lives'
Many asthma sufferers are struggling with how the condition affects their sex lives, according to Asthma UK.
Over two-thirds (68%) of people with asthma who responded to a survey by the charity said their sex lives have been directly affected by their condition.
Callie-Anne, 31, said her sex life with her husband was put "on hold" because of her severe asthma.
The charity said it may be a sign that people do not have the disease under control and they should seek advice.....
