Pregnancy study shows allergies, asthma affects mothers more when expecting girls

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - Expecting moms with chronic conditions, like asthma and allergies, could benefit from new research on maternal immune response.
A study showed such conditions will act up during pregnancy depending on the sex of the baby.
Melissa Fox beams at her baby girl Wren. She wonders if one day she'll struggle with seasonal allergies and asthma. Fox grew up with both.
"I had terrible allergies as a child growing up to the point where I had to get injections," said Fox.....

Illinois schools adapting to new 'asthma emergency' law

CHICAGO (AP) – School personnel across Illinois are adapting to a new state law that requires districts to have an emergency protocol to deal with asthma emergencies.
Under the law anyone who works with students must be trained to handle asthma emergencies. All children with asthma must have a written “asthma action plan” at the school as well, the Chicago Tribune reported. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the legislation in August, and it went into effect Jan. 1.....

Family grieving after 9-year-old Marion boy dies of flu and asthma complications

COLUMBUS, OHIO — A nine-year-old boy who liked to play with monster trucks and action figures has died at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
According to his father, Korbyn Mathias was diagnosed with acute influenza and asthma.
The family knew Korbyn had asthma, but they said they didn't realize he had come down with the flu.
"We didn't know he was sick. That day, the day it happened, [he] and his sister were out playing on a trampoline," said Curtis Mathias, who recalled a trip to get ice cream on Saturday afternoon. "He didn't act sick. He just had a slight cough".....
