9/11 Toxic Exposures and Pediatric Asthma

Among the many health concerns that have arisen since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there are concerns about asthma diagnosed in children and teenagers who were exposed to toxins during and following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
A September 2016 article in Pediatric Research reviewed both asthma and asthma control in exposed adolescents and teens for ten to 11 years after the attacks.....

Smoking fathers increase asthma-risk in future offspring

A Norwegian study shows that asthma is three times more common in those who had a fAnchorather who smoked in adolescence than offspring who didn’t.
It is well known that a mother’s environment plays a key role in child health. However, recent research, including more than 24,000 offspring, suggests that this may also be true for fathers.
“Offspring with a father who smoked only prior to conception had over three times more early-onset asthma than those whose father had never smoked,” says Professor Cecilie Svanes at the Centre for International Health, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, University of Bergen (UiB).....

New Asthma Study Findings

Sorting through hundreds of genetic risk variants for asthma, Australian scientists — with input and data from researchers at 23andMe — have identified an association between asthma and the expression of four genes, a finding that could aid efforts for treating the chronic disease that impacts an estimated 300 million people worldwide.
Published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the new study — led by asthma researchers at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Australia — took an innovative approach to identifying these four genes, developing a gene-based test and software the researchers dubbed EUGENE.....
