Finding that Tylenol is safe for children with asthma eases concerns

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 18 claimed that use of Tylenol by young children with asthma is safe unlike believed earlier. The study wants parents to be aware that acetaminophen is not dangerous to their toddlers as previously believed by some doctors.
The study was conducted on 300 children between the age of 1 and 5 with asthma. The study randomly gave the group either Tylenol or Motrin over a period of one year. It found that children who were given Tylenol did not have increased symptoms for respiratory condition when compared with those taking Motrin.....

Compared with Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen Does Not Worsen Asthma Control

Frequency of asthma exacerbations was similar in young children with mild asthma who took acetaminophen versus ibuprofen for fever or pain.
Observational studies suggest an association between the use of acetaminophen and both the development of asthma and the worsening of control in established asthma in children. The possible mechanism is depletion of glutathione that leads to increased oxidative injury. The effect of acetaminophen on asthma has never been prospectively studied.....
