Children who grow up on farms have a far lower risk of developing asthma and other respiratory allergies, but until recently the underlying mechanism was a mystery. Researchers at Ghent University and the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology have shed light on the conundrum, discovering that exposure to farm dust in early life causes the body to produce a protein that protects against allergic reactions.
