Allergy immunotherapy prevents asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis

Patients with allergic rhinitis who underwent allergy immunotherapy appeared significantly less likely to be diagnosed with asthma, according to study results.
“Allergy immunotherapy effectively prevents the progression of allergic rhinitis to asthma in a real-life setting. This asthma-preventive effect is strongest in products containing native allergens,” Jochen Schmitt, MD, MPH, of the Center for Evidence-based Healthcare at Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus in Germany, and colleagues wrote. “By reducing the risk for asthma, significant health care costs can be saved.....

Kids with asthma fare worse when they live with smokers

Kids with asthma are more likely to have breathing problems and be hospitalized when they live with a smoker, a research review suggests.
The team analyzed data from 25 studies that included a combined total of more than 430,000 children. Kids with asthma who were also exposed to second-hand smoke were 66 percent more likely to seek emergency care and 85 percent more likely to be hospitalized than their peers who didn't spend time around smokers, the study found.....
