Roadways cause traffic-related pollution in homes, exacerbates asthma
Living near a roadway certainly does exacerbate asthma, especially for kids. To wit, a recent study by the University of Southern California (USC)—the most comprehensive by far to date on this topic—found that at least eight percent of the more than 300,000 cases of childhood asthma in Los Angeles County can be attributed to traffic-related pollution at homes within 250 feet of a busy roadway. The findings, released in the September 2012 online edition of the peer-reviewed journal, Environmental Health Perspectives, indicate that previous research underestimated the effects of roadway traffic on asthma.....

Combat the issues caused by post nasal drip and asthma
With dry winter air and cold and flu viruses spreading like crazy, now is the best time to take a second look at your health. Post nasal drip affects a lot of people during this season because the mucus that is constantly produced in your body gets thick and you may have trouble involuntarily swallowing it - which happens normally in the body. For individuals with asthma, this can be extremely uncomfortable. Not only is it hard to breath through the nose because the thick mucus clogs up your nose, having to breath through the mouth can trigger an asthma attack because it takes more effort to breath this way.....

Number of Kuwaitis with asthma continues to soar
KUWAIT: Kuwait doctors are warning of a continual rise in the number of patients suffering from asthma, a disorder that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow, leading to shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, estimating that prevalence has risen to approximately 17 percent of the population. A recent global asthma prevalence study published this year found that global prevalence rates of doctor diagnosed asthma, clinical/treated asthma and wheezing in adults were 4.3 percent, 4.5 percent and 8.6 percent respectively. Commenting on the sidelines of the Middle East Asthma and Allergy meeting (MEAAM) taking place 21 – 22 December in Dubai where local, regional and international experts are meeting to discuss asthma management and treatment, Dr Ali Alenizi, Head of Department for Allergic Diseases at Al Rashed Allergy Clinic in Kuwait, commented that the figure is continuing to surge ahead of global prevalence. The annual cost of treating a case of moderate asthma in Kuwait is $562, while deaths attributed to the disease can be traced to a number of factors including an underestimation of its severity, delayed treatment in acute episodes, and unsatisfactory management.....

Depression Surpasses Asthma as Top Disability Problem among U.S. and Canadian Teens
The recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, perpetrated by 20 year-old Adam Lanza, has intensified the discussion about how mental health is handled and documented in the US. Officials have not provided information about Lanza’s motivation and state of mind, and many are rightfully quick to point out that it is wrong to equate mental illness with the fatal sociopathic actions of a small group of individuals. The conversation about access to mental health care should, however, take into account new data showing an increasing contribution of mental and behavioral disorders to deterioration in the health-related quality of life among teenagers in the US and Canada over the last two decades, and increases elsewhere around the globe.....

Children in asthma hotspots more likely to experience exercise-induced wheeze
Asthmatic children in New York City neighborhoods with high rates of asthma make many more visits to the emergency room (ER) than those who live in other parts of the city. Asthmatic children living in asthma hotspots were twice as likely to experience a common symptom known as exercise-induced wheeze than were those in neighborhoods with lower asthma rates.....

Holiday traditions may trigger child's asthma

While we all enjoy a warm fire on a cold December evening, wood burning fireplaces and stoves are significant triggers of asthma symptoms. Real Christmas trees shed millions of mold spores into your house. Scented candles and potpourri can be airway irritants. Holiday dinner at grandma's house with two dogs and three cats can result in an asthma attack for a child with pet allergy. Uncle Joe's after-dinner cigar should be smoked outside, or better yet, not at all. Often, holiday decorations are stored in a moldy basement or dusty attic. "Decking the halls" can lead to sneezing and wheezing.....
